Canon PowerShot SX210 IS

The Canon IXUS 210 IS Touch is the next generation IXUS and the definition of elegance. The IXUS 210 IS promises fun and easy shooting with a huge 3.5-inch interactive touch LCD screen. Featuring a 24mm wide angle lens, 5x Optical Zoom and HD movie recording giving you the flexibility to capture wide and close up shots or video.

Canon IXUS 210 delivers outstanding pictures
The Canon Digital IXUS 210 offers stunning image quality to accompany its stand-out design. Featuring a 24mm ultra-wide angle, genuine Canon lens – it’s ideal for landscapes and large group shots which require a wider field of view to capture the entire scene. The Canon IXUS 210 digital camera also features a 5x optical zoom which allows users to get even closer to the action. An optical Image Stabilizer (IS) and Motion Detection technology work together to reduce image blur by effectively reducing camera shake and detecting the presence of motion in the scene. In addition, the IXUS 210’s high speed DIGIC 4 processor delivers outstanding responsiveness, rapid auto focus and natural-looking skin tones and colour in the final result.

14 megapixel Canon IXUS 210 camera
Touch AF allows the user to focus on their subject by simply ‘touching’ it on the screen. If the subject is moving, the camera’s integrated Servo AF/AE will automatically track it, maintaining both focus and exposure for the perfect shot. Browsing images is also made easy and natural by enabling users to simply drag their finger across the screen and the camera will match the speed of image review with the speed of the gesture made on-screen. “Touch Actions” allow users to match gestures made on-screen to commonly used functions, such as tagging images as favourites or erasing, rotating, or protecting images in their collection. The colour theme and on-screen icon layout can be customised on the Canon Digital IXUS 210 – allowing users to tailor the interface to suit their preference and style. On-screen Hints and Tips also guide users through the camera’s functions, helping them to understand how and when to use each one to capture the perfect image.

Canon IXUS 210 equipped with 3.5″ LCD screen
A large, high-resolution, 8.8cm (3.5”) PureColor II Touch LCD screen  offers plenty of space for users to easily navigate the finger-friendly touch interface. With wide colour reproduction and high contrast, users can also enjoy their images in rich colour from almost any angle. Active Display now allows users to browse through their images by simply tapping the sides of the camera, introducing a new dimension to sharing content on the camera with friends and family.

Canon Digital IXUS 210 camera technologies
The new Canon IXUS camera features a range of technologies and functions to enable users to capture the perfect picture, every time. Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology can identify up to 22 different shooting scenes, intelligently analysing shooting conditions and automatically applying the optimum picture settings to capture the image. So whether taking a picture of a loved one in sunny conditions, or a group of friends at night, users can relax in the knowledge that the camera is taking care of the complicated settings, all they need to do is point and shoot.

Smart Flash Exposure on the Canon IXUS 210

Smart Flash Exposure has also been introduced to the IXUS 210 – allowing the camera to effectively control the flash in a range of shooting conditions. For example, when taking portraits in sunny conditions, Smart Flash Exposure will identify shadows on the subject’s face and use just enough flash to eliminate them. To prevent over-exposure when photographing at close distances, Smart Flash Exposure will detect how reflective the subject is, its distance from the lens, and set the flash power accordingly.

Canon IXUS 210 features Face detection

With Face Detection Technology, the IXUS 210 can identify up to 35 faces in a single frame before adjusting focus, exposure, flash and white balance to achieve the best possible result. A new Smart Shutter mode also provides inventive ways to control the shutter using Face Detection Technology. In Smart Shutter mode, the user can trigger the shutter using a smile or – with Wink Self-Timer – a simple wink of an eye. FaceSelf-Timer also triggers the shutter two seconds after a new face joins the frame. With these innovative functions, IXUS 210 users can take great people shots, including self-portraits, without the need for another person to be behind the camera.

Canon IXUS 210 shooting modes
A range of new and creative shooting modes make taking exciting and unique shots easy and fun. Fish-eye Effect allows users to achieve the effect of a fish-eye lens with three levels of distortion to choose from, whilst Miniature Effect mimics the effects possible with a ‘Tilt-Shift’ lens – making buildings within a wider landscape appear of model-scale for dramatic results. The IXUS 210 also offers a Low Light mode, providing the ability to shoot in very low light at reduced resolution, expanding the range of conditions in which the camera can be used. Making it easier to browse through large numbers of images, a new Smart Shuffle playback mode selects and displays four suggested images based on the one currently being viewed. This allows users to see images captured in similar situations or with similar settings, providing a new way to review images stored.

Capture and share HD videos with the Canon IXUS 210
Users of the IXUS 210 can also capture special moments in High Definition (HD) video at 720p resolution. Thanks to a YouTube upload function, integrated into the bundled CameraWindow software, users who have already registered with YouTube can login and upload video clips from their PC at the touch of a button. The IXUS 210 also features an integrated HDMI port, allowing video and images to be viewed on any HDMI-compatible output device without loss of quality. Allowing users to store more video and photos than the standard SDHC memory cards  that are currently supported, the IXUS 210 is among Canon’s first products to support SDXC storage cards, offering up to 2TB of storage capacity.

    Canon IXUS 200 IS Review

September 19th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Dirt Cheap Cameras Speicals

The Canon IXUS 200 IS is the latest touchscreen compact camera to come from the industry leader.

Canon has never had much trouble getting its range of IXUS compact cameras noticed: it has historically been among the best-looking, best-performing you can get, and the Canon IXUS 200 IS adds another string to a formidable bow.

The screen on the back isn’t only one of the largest TFTs you’ll find on a compact, but the bright 3-inch widescreen monitor is a touchscreen, the first to feature on a Canon compact.

It sits near the top of the IXUS range – below cameras such as the IXUS 980 and 990, but its 12.1 megapixel (MP) sensor raises it above the crowd.

The IXUS 200 starts in under a second and a half, and the recycle time between shots is around three seconds, which is reasonably good. Its only downfall when pitted against a stopwatch is its continuous mode.

Canon claims an unimpressive 0.8fps per second, but over the course of 10.75 seconds the IXUS 200 grabbed just seven shots, which is under 0.7fps. Again, for the money it would be nice to see a bit more pace, as the IXUS 200′s lack of speed makes it less than ideal for taking pictures of moving subjects, from uncooperative children to wildlife.

    Canon IXUS 110 IS Review

June 20th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Digital Compact Cameras

Staring reasonably enough at the front, the light, clean metallic finish to the face plate of our review sample and its curved edges unconsciously recall the tactile nature of a smooth pebble plucked from the shoreline. Its internally stacked lens, only protruding from the body when in use, is encircled by a mirrored surround that you can almost catch your face in. Top right of the lens is a sniper-thin slit for the built-in flashbulb, while top left of the optic is a small porthole doubling up as an AF assist and self-timer lamp. On a practical level, the positioning of the flash bulb means it’s quite easy for your forefinger to stray in front of it when gripping the camera in both hands.

The IXUS 110 IS’ top plate meanwhile features controls set into a tapering dark grey strip that encircles the camera’s periphery. Starting from top right (if viewing the camera from the back), we find a large shutter button with just the right amount of give to be able to determine its half way point before firing off a shot, and so fix focus and exposure. This is handily encircled by a rocker switch for gliding between wideangle and telephoto settings within the camera’s fairly standard focal range. A minimally protruding lip provides just sufficient purchase for the pad of your forefinger.

Still on the top plate, and moving to the left, is a lozenge shaped on/off button set into the bodywork, thereby avoiding accidental activation when sliding the camera in or out of a pocket. Press this and, with an ident-like ‘sting’, the camera powers up in just over a second, the rear widescreen LCD blinking into life while the lens barrel jets out to arrive at maximum wideangle setting. Adjacent is a slider switch with three available settings: auto mode (incorporating the Smart Auto setting-shifting functionality), program auto (which allows the adjustment and selection of a wider array of shooting functions) plus a movie setting. As you’d expect, given the preamble at the top of this review, everything is pretty much point and shoot in auto mode.

Press the ‘function’ button on the Canon Digital IXUS 110 IS’ back and a left hand tool bar merely presents the user with the ability to set image recording size (therefore determining the number of pixels utilised) plus the compression level (Fine or Normal only). Should your thumb come to alight on the fiddly scroll wheel surrounding the function button, a virtual dial appears onscreen offering up the features normally surrounding a four-way control pad on rival models. These are the ability to adjust flash settings (auto or off), change the display (shooting icons on or off), select the self timer options (10 seconds, two seconds, the ‘face timer’ option, plus, unusually at this level, a custom option), while, in auto mode, the fourth option to swap focus distance between macro and infinity is disabled.

    Canon IXUS 100 IS

    Canon IXUS 100 IS

    Canon IXUS 100 IS

Canon’s Digital IXUS 100 IS (or PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH as it’s known in North America) is a 12.1 Megapixel compact with a 3x optically-stabilised zoom and 2.5in screen. Announced in March 2009, it’s the successor to the IXUS 85 IS / PowerShot SD770 IS. The new model adds two extra Megapixels, HD video recording in the 720p format, an HDMI port for HD slideshows and Scene Recognition in Auto. At just 18.4mm thick, it’s also the slimmest compact in Canon’s current range. While the higher resolution and auto scene detection are key improvements to the specification, the big new addition is High Definition, both for video capture and TV output.

While Panasonic has offered HD capture and output (albeit with analogue component) for some time in its Lumix range, these are all brand new features for a Canon compact. Also new over its predecessor is Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 processor, which equips the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS with more efficient H.264 compression for movies, face detection with improved handling of profiles, and a Servo AF mode for tracking subjects in motion. It’s a powerful feature-set to find in such a small body, but the question as always is whether it can live up to the promise and deliver the goods in practice. Find out in our review where we’ll detail the new features and directly compare the image quality against key rivals.

Measuring 87x55x18mm and weighing 132g with its rechargeable battery, the new IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS is essentially the same size as its predecessor when viewed from the front, but 2mm thinner; this may not sound like a great deal written down, but in your hands, the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS really does look and feel very small and will easily slip into most shirt pockets.

Canon IXUS 870IS / PowerShot SD 880IS - rear controls

Canon’s gone for a smooth body with rounded corners and an absence of sharp edges, giving the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS an organic look that feels comfortable in your hands and never digs into your body when pocketed. At first glance there worryingly doesn’t appear much to hold onto – no ridge nor even a cross-hatched logo to prevent your right middle finger from slipping – but the body’s semi-matt finish provides surprisingly effective purchase. Your right middle finger naturally bends and rests on the front surface without slipping, while your thumb finds some grip in the tiny mode switch on the rear. You really can hold the camera quite comfortably and confidently in one hand.

Overall the stainless steel body is finished to a very high standard, feeling as good as it looks with no creaks or poor joins – and if you don’t like the black finish pictured above, Canon also offers the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS in silver, gold or red. If you’d literally like to make a splash, Canon also offers an optional WP-DC31 waterproof housing that’ll protect the camera to depths of 40m.

The IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS is powered by an NB-4L rechargeable Lithium Ion battery pack which Canon claims is good for 210 shots under CIPA conditions – down from the 300 shots of its predecessor with its NB-6L pack. The battery pack can also be switched for an optional ACK-DC10 AC adapter kit for mains operation. The battery compartment also houses an SD memory card slot, and alongside the door, just off-centre, is a metal tripod thread.

Behind a small flap in the upper right corner of the camera’s rear are a combined USB and standard TV output, alongside an HDMI port. This makes the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS one of Canon’s first compacts to feature an HDMI port, allowing it to make HD slideshows on suitably-equipped HDTVs. Note the HDMI port isn’t active during composition, although you can monitor the live feed over the standard definition TV output.

The optical zoom range remains the same 3x as its predecessor, although the equivalent coverage on the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS is fractionally wider: 33-100mm compared to 35-105mm on the IXUS 85 IS / SD770 IS. It’s worth noting though the lens on the new model is optically a little darker than its predecessor at f3.2-5.8 compared to f2.8-4.9.
